In 2025 my book-buying can be described as restrained. Only two titles made it into my shopping cart. One of them was Joe Dolce's “Modern Psychedelics: The Handbook for Mindful Exploration,” and I can report the money was well spent. I’ve been waiting for someone to write this type of book for quite some time, and I’m glad to say the waiting is over.

Joe’s book is a clear and accessible guide to contemporary psychedelic use that blends science, history, and practical advice for adults. If your desire is to approach these substances thoughtfully and responsibly, then the content delivered meets the mark. I read it cover to cover over a weekend and found that it builds a logical foundation to understand a complex subject. Even after the initial read I continue to keep it handy as it provides value as an ongoing resource.

What Dolce has assembled is a remarkably accessible guide to contemporary psychedelic use that braids together science, history, and the kind of practical advice needed for anyone interested in psychedelics. This is not a memoir, but a proper handbook that summarizes current research while never letting you forget that intentionality, safety, and integration are the load-bearing walls of this entire enterprise.

The central mission of “Modern Psychedelics” is to provide reliable, evidence-informed guidance. This is sorely needed as we find ourselves at a cultural moment when psychedelic use is accelerating faster than public understanding can keep pace. The book is written for adults, both curious beginners as well as seasoned "travelers".

Substance-specified chapters are included and the surveys the major psychedelic players: MDMA, psilocybin mushrooms, ketamine, DMT and 5-MeO-DMT, ayahuasca, LSD, mescaline cacti, and ibogaine. Dolce includes sections on how to set up an intentional journey, the microdosing phenomenon, using psychedelics within relationships, and a set of best-practice guidelines for responsible use and the integration work that is too often skipped.

He places our current "psychedelic renaissance” within a longer historical arc that runs from Indigenous and ceremonial use through the mid-century research boom, the dark decades of prohibition, and the recent revival of clinical trials that have made psychedelics respectable again. He summarizes how contemporary studies are exploring treatment possibilities for PTSD, depression, addiction, and other conditions that have proven stubbornly resistant to conventional psychiatric medicine.

Dolce stresses repeatedly that psychedelics are powerful, not universally appropriate, and absolutely not for everyone. He discusses in detail who should avoid them and why, addressing medical and psychological contraindications, the real dangers posed by unscreened underground providers, and the ethical rot introduced by commercialization and the hype machine that's currently running at full tilt.

It is obvious this book is the product of deep research coupled with knowledge gained from interviewing many of those with direct knowledge of the subject. Thanks to Joe Dolce for the time and effort it took to make this information widely available.

I recommend reading “Modern Psychedelics” in a physical, non-electronic, format. It just feels good in my hands. There is something in the tactile feel of the paper I found pleasing. The formatting, layout, and graphics help deliver the information without causing one to become distracted.

The book's real strength is its tone. Its accurate and comprehensive scope balances science, spirituality, and practical advice without letting any one element dominate. It's the book I wish had existed twenty years ago, and I'm glad it exists now.
